ABSTRACT
Biofilm secreted by the metabolic activities of microorganism is known to have a great impact on the geochemical and
biological characteristics of sediment particles and its environmental effects in hydro-environment system, yet little effort
has been made to study the considerable variability in the pollutants adsorption process of sediment particles caused by
the growth of biofilm. Understanding the changes associated with biofilm growth and quantifying the parameters scale
over which these changes occur is important for developing suitable associated experimental designs and for
understanding how biofilm mediate sediment properties and environmental factors. This paper takes the phosphorus
pollutants as adsorbent and studies the influence of biofilm on pollutants adsorption of sediment particles. The
isothermal equilibrium adsorption experiment of sediment without and with biofilm for different growth time on
phosphorus are carried out and Langmuir adsorption isotherm is adopted to analyze the adsorption rule of biological
sediment on pollutants under the impact of biofilm. It provides the first evidence for the interaction of sediment particles,
biofilm and pollutants. The results show that the phosphorus adsorption capacity of sediment particles increase with the
growth of biofilm.
