The shoreline evolution of the nha trang beach, khanh hoa, vietnam

Beach of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam is regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with blue sea, white sand and sunshine. However, after the artificial facilities were built along the beach such as the embankments for the expansion of Tran Phu Street, the 40 m groin for the MOPS hotel protection, the beach underwent a complex transformation. Especially the deterioration of the beach has been a particularly serious problem for the development of the region. In this study, mathematical models were used to analyze the evolution of the beach and the impact of the artificial structures to the shoreline. The results obtained from the mathematical model were compared and evaluated with the data extracted from the high resolution (10MP) and high frequency (2Hz) video camera system installed on the beach of Nha Trang from 5/2013 to present. The mathematical model and the extracting model of the video camera system were calibrated with the beach bathymetry data using automatic tachometer and DGPS. The results show strongly erosion phenomenon occur at the area behind the groin during the northeast monsoon reveal foot of the embankments along the beach. In the contrast, the sedimentation phenomenon occurs strongly during the southwest monsoon shown in the sediment deposition exceeds the length of the groin. In addition, the process of erosion and restore the Nha Trang beach after being impacted by the storm Nari and Haiyan in 2013 were also analyzed in detail.
The results showed that a combination of mathematical modeling and a video camera system is a convenient tool for analyzing the evolution of Nha Trang Bay shoreline with the purposes of management and developing a sustainable beach.
