Air-pressure drop in a penstock in emergency closure of intake gates

This paper reports an analysis of the time-dependent water and air flows in a penstock as well as the resultant drop in air pressure in the penstock chamber, caused by closing head gates. The analysis methods are discussed, along with applications to two cases of emergency closure of power generating stations (La Tuque generating station and the Isle- Maligne generating station) in Quebec, Canada.
