TESTING OF SELECTED MICROSCOPIC APPROACHES OF TOTAL BED MATERIAL LOAD TRANSPORT FOR SELECTED DATA SETS

Sediment transport is the key factor in effective design of hydraulic structures and open channel water conveyance. Prediction of total bed material load transport rate is of prime importance as it can be considered as a variable affecting the design of alluvial channel and various hydraulic structures. The transport of sediment mixtures in open channels is complicated because of non-uniformity of sediment in the natural river. A microscopic approach considers the non- uniformity of sediments. In the present study, prediction of total bed material load using microscopic approaches of Van Rijn (1984) and Swamee and Ojha (1991) is made based on Samaga et al flume data set and field data of Sacramento River, California. The accuracy and reliability of total bed material load obtained is verified using Statistical parameters such as Mean Square Error (MSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Discrepancy Ratio (r) and Inequality Coefficient. Van Rijn?s bed load function give better results as compared to that of Swamee and Ojha bed load function. For suspended load transport rate Swamee and Ojha?s function gives better results as compared to that of Van Rijn?s suspended load function. The total load transport rate for Swamee and Ojha predicts much better and accurate results to that of Van Rijn total load transport rate. In order to verify the validity of Van Rijn (1984 b) and Swamee and Ojha (1991) suspended load function, another data set (29 Field data) measured at two United State Geological Survey (USGS) gauging station namely Butte city and Colusa, along Sacramento river in California has been used for these data set the prediction of suspended load by both the function is poor.
