CONSTRUCTION OF A ONE-DIMENSIONAL MODEL FOR THE CAVAILLON RIVER, HAITI, FROM AN IN-SITU SURVEY OF THE BATHYMETRY

The definition of the bathymetry of a natural river is a key element in the modelling of flows in a natural river. In areas where detailed topographic and bathymetric surveys are available, the construction of a hydraulic model might appear as a very simple task. However, in the case of the Cavaillon River in Southern Haiti, only very limited data are available, and the only DTM currently available has a 30 m resolution, which is not sufficient considering that the width of the minor bed is about 20 m. In this context, this paper presents the in-situ survey carried out in order to establish a one-dimensional model for the river that could be used for flood modelling purposes. Indeed, the Cavaillon River presents an uncertain behavior leading to serious management problems and flood risks with significant potential damage to local populations. The considered river reach starts from the Dory spillway and goes up to the confluence of the Cavaillon river and the Boulmier river (25 km). Section surveys were conducted regularly along the river and combined with sparse topographic data treated using open-source geographic information systems in order to finally propose a realistic one-dimensional model of the river. This in-situ work is then followed by a first 1-D steady flow modeling using the available data and an estimation of the bed roughness. The results will be compared where possible to in-situ measurements of the water level.
