ADVANCES IN HYDRAULIC MODELLING TOOLS USED FOR KOWLOON DRAINAGE MASTER PLAN REVIEW IN HONG KONG

This paper describes the advanced hydraulic modelling techniques adopted in the Review of the Drainage Master Plans (DMPs) in West Kowloon and East Kowloon for Drainage Services Department, the Government of Hong Kong Special 2 Administrative Region (HKSAR). The study area of the DMPs Review covers a catchment of about 53 km with the majority of the areas urbanised. The drainage system in the area was built over 20 years and mainly consists of pipelines, box culverts and some engineered channels. A number of utilities intrusion and dry weather flow interceptors are also identified in the old drainage system. In the past, only the 1-Dimensional modelling system such as HydroWorks and InfoWorks was used for the simulation of flood routing through the closed conduit drainage system. State-of-the-art modelling of drainage system is available and based upon the integrated description of rainfall-runoff, pipe flow, channel flow and overland flow. Due to the complexity of the drainage systems in the urban area, advanced modelling techniques 1D-2D numerical InfoWorks ICM model was currently adopted to assess the hydraulic performances of the study area taking into account the interaction between river and pipeline networks and 2D overland flow conditions. In supporting the DMP Review Study, impacts arising from the utilities intrusion and dry weather flow interceptors have also been considered in this advanced model. Besides, Real-Time-Control function of this advanced modelling tool has also been used to simulate the operation rules for a number of automatic drainage facilities and to effectively define the operation mode of a few large scale drainage mitigation works.
