Ski-jump-step Energy Dissipators

Given problems such as atomization, energy dissipation and cavitation damage caused by high-speed flows, a new type of energy dissipator called the ski-jump-step energy dissipator was developed in which pre-aeration is achieved through jets generated by ski-jumps and further aeration is achieved via aeration stilling basins. This method provides fully aerated flows for the stepped chute with large unit discharges. The experimental models, which consist of ski-jumps, pre-step sections, aeration stilling basins and stepped chutes, were designed, and the geometric forms and hydraulic characteristics of the energy dissipators were investigated, including the flow patterns, the principle and effectiveness of energy dissipation, the characteristics of the air entrainment and the pressure distributions. Even under 2 conditions of large unit discharges (q = 118.00 m \s), results obtained for the whole steps of the stepped chute demonstrate energy-dissipation ratios as high as 75.8 % and air concentrations of 3.6 %, as well as suitable time-average pressure distributions. The methodology developed herein provides a new approach for energy dissipation in stepped chutes at the large discharges.
