IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Investigation on Hydraulic Performance of Stilling Basin with Shallow-water Cushion
Author : Lianxia Li, Huasheng Liao,Da Liu,Yongshen Ru and Tianxiang Li
Numerical simulation and experimental investigation on hydraulic performances of Stilling Basin with Shallow-Water Cushion (SBSWC) were conducted by using 3D RNG k-e turbulence model and physical model. The good agreement between the calculated and experimental results including flow regime, water free surface, velocity, and pressure distributions reveals the new different hydraulic performances of SBSWC from conventional stilling basin (CSB). Both numerical and experimental results show that SBSWC can reduce the velocity near the bottom and has more advantages in improving the hydraulic characteristics over conventional stilling basin. The maximum velocity along vertical direction is located at 2\3 depth of the shallow water cushion away from the bottom and a pressure impact zone on the bottom is found similar to that of the plunge pool. The bottom velocity and hydrodynamic pressure of SBSWC are obviously less than those of CSB. In addition, both surface roller and bottom swirl occur in SBSWC which can provide better flow regime of hydraulic jump and higher dissipation rate than CSB.
