Prediction of Dynamic Forces on Broad Crested Weir within a Large Circular Open Channel

In this experimental investigation some geometrical characteristics and the prediction of the dynamic forces, from the water flow over a horizontal broad crested weir within a large circular (D) open channel, are presented, analyzed and discussed. The diameter D=const., while the lengths L of the weir and the upstream hydraulic heads h are varying. The onedimensional equations are presented and the dimensionless force, K , from the weir and horizontal boundary shear stresses, are indirectly calculated ? N based on laboratory experiments. The dimensionless critical flow depths over the weir?s crest are related to dimensionless distances (L ) from the weir?s brink, while the dimensionless downstream depth is also c investigated and two relative equations are proposed. K is related to the ratios h\L and L\D and a N pertinent equation is provided. Finally, an arithmetic example is given, in order to help the hydraulic engineer when designing pertinent hydraulic structures.
