Canal controller for the largest water transfer project in china

A control system consisting of a decentralized feedback controller,a centralized feedforward controller and decoupler is presented for the middle Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project in China. The feedback controller is kind of the level-discharge cascade PI controller, which has the merits as diminishing unknown disturbances and reducing the coupling effects of the control action to the downstream canal pools. The volume compensation algorithm is used in the feedforward controller for reducing time delay phenomena appeared in scheduled delivery of the long distance canal system. And the decoupler is designed to decrease the coupling effects of the control action from the upstream pools. This controller is tested in part of the middle Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project operated under constant downstream water depth by means of numerical simulation. The results show that the control system can significantly reduce time delay and improve control quality of the system.
