A Measurement Technique on the Hydrodynamic Force on the Free Surface-Piercing Cylinder at a Yawed Angle

In order to measure the hydrodynamic force on the free surface-piercing cylinder at a yawed angle, a new force measurement instrument with three tension-compression sensors was developed, and the anemometer output voltage was collected in a PC through a data acquisition card with Labview s oftware, the measuring accuracy for three tension-compression sensors are 0.03% respectively, the s ampling rate used was 100HZ, the single length being 180s.The precision of the force measurement instrumentwas checked by comparing to the published results in terms of drag coefficient of the vertical 4 4 cylinder at Reynolds number from 0.75 10 to 2.2 10 ,and using the weight, together with the buoyant force acting on the cylinderto valid the precision of the measurement instrument as the hydrodynamic force on the cylinder at an angle of incidence from -30 to 30. The results show that the new instrument has a high precision for measuring the hydraulic force both on the vertical cylinder and the cylinder at an angle of incidence from -30 to 30.
