Hydraulic characteristics of flows in stepped spillway tunnel with curved shape

Negative hydraulic effects exist in routine stepped spillway tunnels, such as water-wing phenomena, flow outreaching the tunnel surface, et al. Stepped spillway with curved shape can effectively improve the flow pattern, enhance the flow aeration, and increase the effect of energy dissipation. In this paper, hydraulic characteristics of flows in a stepped spillway tunnel were investigated in experiments, whereas, the Mixture Realizable k-ε model was used to simulate the aeration flows. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The study shows that pressure distribution on the inclined surface of steps which is in connecting section is similar to that on the horizontal surface of steps in the fully-developed flow region. The testing results of air concentration show that air concentration near the bottom and sidewall is about 10%, which is sufficient to mitigate cavitation damage.
