Ecological Capability Classification in Hesarak Watershed by Using Multi Criteria Evaluation Method and GIS for Afforestation

The human activities toward development have many impacts on the environment. The development and environment are two inseparable issues; therefore it is necessary to reduce the damage to the environment by using the environment management tools at all development plans. In this respect, the assessment of ecological capability is an important issue which attracts lots of concern and attention. The objective of this research is to assess the ecological capability for foresting in the limits of Hesarak, Tehran province. After the study and identification of the ecological factors whether the physical factors (Physiographic, topography, agrology etc) and biological factors (vegetation), the reports and maps are prepared and then integrated by geographic information system (GIS). The result of integration was a layer of information unit, whose absolute limitations in each index were specified and then they were omitted from the assessment process by using Boolean logic. The assessable area of the remaining district after omission is 843.8 Hectares which has a relative limitation and was studied by Multiple attribute decision making method. In the multiple attribute decision making method, the qualitative values were changed into qualitative values by using bipolar interval scale. The weight of the criteria was designed through analytic hierarchy process method by using pair compared matrix and was specified by using skilled experts? advices. At the last stage the final value was calculated by using simple additive weighting method and the ecological capability of the area without limitation (843.8 Hectares) was placed in 4 classes. The positioning of the forest development concluded from the four classes, by the multiple attribute decision making method was performed: The planning for the forest development was made for classes 1 and 2 with a total area of 489.17 Hectares.
