Experimental Study on Removing Spilled Surface Oil Using Eco-friendly Corn Stalk

The paper reports experimental studies into the possibility of using corn stalk and carbonized corn stalk to remove diesel oil from water. The corn stalk is firstly pyrolyzed at different temperatures and time periods. Then the optimal carbonization condition is obtained through pure oil sorption experiments; next the oil sorption capacity and floating performance of corn stalk and carbonized corn stalk was also experimentally studied; and finally the effects of various experimental parameters including particle size, dosage, oscillation frequency, oil film thickness on carbonized corn stalk?s oil sorption capacity and oil removal rate are examined using the orthogonal experimental method. The results show that the raw material and carbonized material absorbed diesel oil rapidly and can reach saturation within five minutes and their sorption capacities are approximately 7.03g\g and 11.2 g\g. The raw material?s floating property was not good, but the carbonization can improve the corn stalk floating performances significantly and float on the water for a long time without sinking to the bottom. Taking both oil removal rate and sorption capacity into account, the optimum conditions are: carbonized corn stalk particle size is between 380śm and 500śm, oscillation frequency of 0 r min-1, oil film thickness of 0.55 mm and adsorbent dosage of 0.18 g. Under this condition, the carbonized corn stalk shows a larger adsorption capacity and oil removal rate to diesel oil.
