IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

WARMF Model Simulation of Nonpoint Sources Pollution in Chaohe River Watershed
Author : Runzhe Geng, Xiaoyan Wang, Lidong Niu and Shuhuai Duan
Miyun Reservoir is a unique surface drinking water source for Beijing City with main pollutants from non-point sources (NPS). In this watershed, NPS pollution control will be one of the most important issues in water environmental protection in the next several decades. In this paper, a watershed water quality management model from the United States - WARMF was used in Chaohe River watershed for simulating the pollution loads of the whole watershed. After parameter sensitivity analysis, water quality parameters were calibrated with the data in the year of 2002~2010; the spatial and temporal distribution of non-point source pollution loads from 2002 to 2010 were estimated. TMDL and Consensus Module were used to analyze the effectiveness of Best management Practices at different scenario includeing the buffer strip, less application of fertilizer and less area of the crops. The results indicated that: 1) In the calibration period, the relative error range of average concentration for TN and TP was 7.24%~28.41% and 4.37%~16.88%, respectively. In the validation period, it can be seen that the relative errors of the TN simulations in Xiahui were reduced from 14.79% (2008) to 3.63% (2009) and 6.84% (2010), and TP simulations in Xiahui were reduced from 15.75% (2008) to 4% (2009) and 7.68% (2010), and the NSE (Nash-Sutclife Efficiency)value for validation period (2008~2010) as 0.73, 0.87, 0.89 and 0.86, 0.86, 0.87 respectively; 2)For the spatial and temporal distribution, the pollutions are almost in the flood season, between June and September, the spatial distribution of TN and TP loads presents a gradually increase from northwest to southeast with the precipitation; 3)The vegetative filter strip with 20 mwidth have the highest effectiveness for TN and TP.
