IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Effect of Uncontrolled Landuse Change to the Inundation Pattern and Its Possible Measures Case Study: Lambidaro Lowland Sub System in Palembang
Author : Sumi Amariena Hamim, F.X. Suryadi and Fachrurrozie Sjarkowi
Palembang is the capital city of South Sumatra Province and every year Palembang is facing flood problems which cost quite high per year due to the damages of infrastructure and other urban components. These flood problems are mainly caused by several factors and among others are uncontrolled landuse change in the watershed, high rainfall intensity, not sufficient drainage capacity of the urban drainage water management systems and also not proper operation and maintenance of the urban drainage system. Besides that also due to the high tides in the Musi (main) River and its low topographical elevation. This research focussed on Lambidaro River System in Palembang City and the methodology of this research consists of analysing spatial ecological conditions of the area and to do the related data collection and analysis which covers landuse, soil type, hydrology and its urban water management system. Land unit concept and the landscape ecology approach were used. Based on these physical conditions of the area, a mathematical modelling was set up in combination with the GIS application. Based on the existing conditions of the area, flood, inundation pattern and the hydraulic performance of its urban drainage water management system, several scenarios have been checked and evaluated. In this Lambidaro River system, it can be concluded that the flood and inundation problem is mainly caused by the uncontrolled landuse change. Several measures have been developed and tested and finally, the effect of these measures were evaluated and flood or inundation protection system will be proposed for the Lambidaro River system.
