Wall-Wake Flows Downstream of a Spherical Particle Placed on a Gravel Bed

This paper reports a study on the time-averaged characteristics of turbulent wall-wake flow downstream of a sphere placed on a rough-wall. The distributions of the defects of streamwise velocity, Reynolds shear stress (RSS) and turbulence intensities show a reasonable degree of similarity when they are scaled by their respective peak defect values. For the velocity defect distributions, the vertical distances are scaled by the height of occurrence of the half peak defect. However, for the distributions of the defects of the RSS and the turbulence intensities, the vertical distances are scaled by the height of occurrence of the half peak RSS defect. The magnitudes of the peak defect of all the quantities decrease with the distance downstream of the sphere, signifying a recovery of their undisturbed distributions. In addition, a theoretical similarity solution for the velocity defect distributions is deduced.
