Modeling of the Bank Erosion Process in the Upper Jingjiang Reach Using BSTEM

The degrees of riverbank stability in the Upper Jingjiang River of the Middle Yangtze River were calculated during different stages using BSTEM (Bank Stability and Toe Erosion Model). The results indicate that: the degrees were low during dry season and rising stage, which led to weak bank erosion; and they were high during flood season and recession stage, which belonged to the stage of intensive bank erosion. In addition, the effects of bank toe erosion and water table variation on the degree of bank stability were investigated. This analysis indicates that these two factors can cause intensive bank failure during flood season and recession stage. Finally, the process of bank erosion of the right riverbank at Jing34 section was simulated over the period from Nov. 2008 to Oct. 2010. The model-predicted results are in close agreement with the measured data of the total width of bank retreat and the bank geometry after failure.
