The Effect of Ogee Types on the Hydraulic Characteristics in Spillway Tunnels

The commercial fluid simulation software FLUENT was employed to investigate the : effect of the ogee segments with several safety factors and inlet velocities on the 3D flow hydraulic characteristics in a spillway tunnel. The distribution laws of the velocity, pressure and shear stress characteristics of the water flow were obtained. The results show that the pressure and the shear stress along the ogee bottom are concerned with the ogee types and the upstream velocities. The pressure gradients at the beginning sections increase with the safety factors decreasing at low flow rates. At big flow rates, the beginning sections pressure gradients first decrease and then increase. The shear stresses raise along the ogee curves at low flows. When flow rates increase, the shear stresses of the ogee types reduce to some extent, then raise. According to the calculations, the relationship expressions between K values and minimum pressures are proposed. It provides a basis for ogee design and construction.
