Experimental Study of Planar Flow Field in Vegetated Open Channel Flow Using PIV Technique

Experiments were conducted using PIV technique to study the flow structure in vegetated open channel. Rigid cylinders were used to simulate vegetations and they were planted in a staggered pattern with spacing equal to 60.0 mm. Vegetations were all emergent (i.e., flow depth is less than vegetation height) in this study. From the analysis of PIV images, this paper presents an illustration of the major planar flow characteristics including (a) time averaged velocity field, (b) turbulence intensity, (c) instantaneous velocity field, (d) Reynolds shear stress, and (e) turbulent kinetic energy field.
