Optimal Control of Flow and Sediment in River and Watershed

This study develops an innovative optimization procedure to achieve optimal control of flows and sediment transport in an alluvial river or a watershed to control flood water stages or sediment transport and morphological changes. It aims to develop a multiple-objective decision making tool which can regulate river flows and sediment transport under operational constraints. The developed model combines a nonlinear optimization procedure with a well-established one-dimensional model (CCHE1D) for simulating dynamic river flows and morphodynamic processes in channels. For simulating flows, the one-dimensional nonlinear Saint-Vernant equations are used. For modeling morphodynamic processes, a non-uniform and non-equilibrium sediment transport model in CCHE1D is employed. An adjoint sensitivity model for flow dynamics and sediment transport are developed to search for the best solutions of control actions. This simulation-based optimization model is applied to control river flood and morphological changes by diverting sediment or water during storm events.
