Treatment Technology and Current Situation of Dredged Sediment in China

Along with the process of accelerative industrialization and the development of economy, more and more dredged sediments are produced by dredging projects, such as port fairway, water conservancy construction and environmental protection. According to recent statistics, about 700 billion cubic meter sediments are produced per year. There are many kinds of organic matters and high contents of nitrogen and phosphorus in dredged sediment. In addition, the heavy metals are the most important element of limiting resource utilization of the dredged sediment. The paper studied the typical dredging process composed of irrigating digging, pipelining and geotechnical duct tape dehydration and the corresponding equipment, the production of dredged sediment in China, nitrogen and phosphorus contents of sediment. In addition, the treatments of the dredged sediment were discussed in detail, such as dehydration, harmless treatment of heavy metals, resource utilization and final disposal of sediment. The dredged sediment is often dehydrated before treatment and it is very beneficial that the flocculation and dehydration are combined; The dehydrated sediment is treated to harmless materials then it can be utilized as engineering materials, construction and land utilization, The biological leaching is the best harmless process of heavy metals; The heavy polluted sediment should be treated directly, if free-pollution disposal still cannot satisfy the resource requirements and the landing and burning are the most common methods. All in all, In terms of different kinds of sediment, the treatment should be considered comprehensively according to the environmental safety, investments, the feasibility and efficiency in order to make the environment, society and economy beneficial.
