Probabilistic Analysis of Sand Transport Behavior at the Frisian Inlet (NL) under Storm Events

This paper describes the details of Delft3D model which is based on the Navier-Stokes equations using Alternating Direction Implicit method. The objective of this study is to give insight in the hydrodynamic characteristics and sediment transport behavior of Frisian inlet under wind-driven forcing and storm events. A good agreement between the model results and the observation data shows that the model is applicable of reproducing the current motion and sediment transport under storm events and non-storm events, and can be used to simulate the long-term evolution under different conditions in this area. Involving with so many physical and numerical parameters during the modeling, some of the parameters were obtained through real-site experiments and some were used as experienced values which were successfully used in this area or neighboring places. From the results we can see that it caused a large change on the sand transport due to the external forcing. Probability approach was applied in this study to confirm the impact of sand transport from storm events. Modeling of sea storms with large return periods is based on historical hindcasts and aims at explaining the occurrence of the change of sediment transport. The study mainly focuses on the morphological response on sand concentration under storm events and non-storm events.
