Analysis on the Sediment Transport Characteristics in Huanghua Sea Area under Different Wind Regimes

Huanghua Port locates on a silt-muddy coast in Cangzhou City, Hebei Province of China, about 90 km east of the Bohai Bay. These silt-muddy sediments are easily stirred up by wind and transported by tidal flow. The variation of current induced by wind has significant influence on sediment concentration and sediment siltation in this sea area. The year of 2012 was the peak period of berths construction in Huanghua general port district, including the extension project of north jetty and reclamation projects for the First Port Basin and the Second Port Basin. Such new events as 200,000 DWT navigation channel project and south cofferdam project of Phase Two are underway. In this paper, tidal flow and sediment transport numerical models for Huanghua Port coastal water are established on the basis of Delft3D-FLOW and Delft3D-SED, and they are calibrated and validated by the field data measured in 2012 which include tides, tidal flow velocity magnitudes and directions, and sediment concentrations. The validated models are used to simulate tidal flow fields and sediment transport in 2012 coupled with three wind regimes, i.e., calm, moderate wind and gale. Comparison and analysis of the characters in flow field and sediment transport are made among those three scenarios, the results indicate: 1) in calm days, the overall sediment concentrations are relatively low in the nearby sea area of Huanghua Port, and high sediment concentration zone along the coast is relatively narrow; 2) ENE moderate wind has slight impact on tidal level rise and does minor changing on hydrodynamics and sediment transport compared with calm; 3) under ENE gale, there exists evident tidal level rise and obvious imbalance between flood flow and ebb flow. Besides, sediment concentration has a significant increase and the high sediment concentration zone along the coast is widened obviously.
