IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Numerical Study with a Combined Solution Model on the Water-sediment Transport and Bed Evolution in the Pearl River System Caused by Large Project
Author : Sulan Lu and Qiong Wu
Lingding Bay is one of the main watercourses in the Pearl river estuary. The stability of Pearl river regime is very significant for the safety of flood and tide control of the adjacent area, and also benefits to ensure the normal running condition of the coastal harbor and its channel. Large project in the pearl river estuary changes the local water-sediment dynamic environment obviously. The change may reach the river network upstream, and causes the different effect of water-sediment transport into the estuary from the mouths. The large project- a planning harbor will be built along Dachan island and Xiaochan island, locating in the east of Lingding Bay. Establishing a 1d&2d combined solution tidal model coupling sediment module in the river network and estuary of the pearl river, with an additional 2d tidal model coupling sediment module in the local area near the planning harbor, choosing the typical hydrological condition, the paper simulates and analyzes the influence of large project implementation on the evolution of local seabed nearby and the water-sediment transport of river network upstream. It indicates that, the construction of planning harbor along Dachan island and Xiaochan island increases the water-sediment transport into the estuary from Humen and Jiaomen ?the mouths which are influenced more easily by tidal dynamic in the east of Lingding Bay comparing with Hongqimen and Hengmen. Yet the change of the water-sediment transport from the mouths is very little and will not harm the normal process of bed-evolution in the pearl river network. It also shows that, the excavation of channel and berth area slower the local current obviously and changes the suspended sediment dispersion correspondingly. The simulation presents that the severe siltation happens in these area and the maximum silting can reach 0.80m per year. The research can grasp the general influence on the water-sediment transport in the pearl river system caused by the planning harbor macroscopically with the 1d&2d combined solution model. It also can exhibit the different erosion and silting distribution of seabed around the project area in detail before and after its implementation with the local 2d model. The paper can offer some reference on similar research and will benefit the effective executive management on such large project.
