Causes and Failure Mechanics of Seawall in Cua Tung Beach, Vietnam

Cua Tung beach is located in the North of Tung estuary in the coastal of Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province, Vietnam. This beach is known as the Queen of beaches in Vietnam, attracting many tourists who come to experience its beauty. Before 2005, Tung's estuary had occurred accretion during the period from February to August due to longshore sediment transport from Southern to Northern. It induced the unstable of navigation channel in Tung estuary, and a jetty was built in the South bank of the estuary in 2005. The jetty took an important rule in stabling of the navigation channel and the estuary. However, it led to imbalance in sediment transport, and high erosion in Cua Tung beach, 700 m length of seawall structure was built to prevent the erosion in 2009. Conversely, a part of Cua Tung Seawall was destroyed in November, 2010. In this paper, a site investigation is carried out to value the failure status and analysis its mechanism. Several technical measurements also recommended to upgrade the coastal structures in the area of Cua Tung Beach.
