IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Lessons on the Management of Flood Risk in Colombia, South America

In Colombia, South America, flooding from heavy rains during 2010-2011, produced heavy losses in infrastructure, lives, and property. The paper intends to share with the international water community some experiences and lessons from these events, particularly relating to present hydrologic conditions, risk management tools and policies. Some outstanding cases are analyzed inthe Magdalena 2 river basin, (257,000 Km ), holding85% of the countries? population, (total, 45 million), most agricultural valleys and major cities.
