IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Dam-break Flood Risk Mapping Basing on GIS for Jinniushan Reservoir
Author : Jingxiu Wu, Ziwu Fan, Ming Zhang, Zhenkun Ma and Sha Shi
Dam-break flood risk mapping can provide technology support effectively for disaster prevention and mitigation, which is important to the development of regional alarm system and emergency plans for flood control and dam-break flood analysis, however, the flood risk mapping has not carried out systematically. GIS technology has been used for spatial data analysis and processing, and the softwares such as Janet and Blukenue were used to produce mesh, interpolate the terrain data and have a post-processing of the model, the finite element method was applied to simulate the two dimension dam-break flood routing of the Jinniushan reservoir. Based on the analysis of combination of design flood and reservoir water level, the numerical model successfully simulated the flood process in the downstream after the main dam burst, then the flood risk information about submerged depth, inundated range and velocity have been obtained and dam-break flood risk maps of the Jinniushan reservoir have been worked out, which provided a basis for flood control decision in the downstream of Jinniushan reservoir and provided technological reference for the the risk maps in China.
