IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Effects of Gravity Waves on Shear Instability in Compound Channels
Author : Man Yue Lam and Mohamed S. Ghidaoui
The effects of gravity waves on shear instability in compound channels are investigated. Scale analysis of the shallow water equations shows that the shear instability depends on the two Froude numbers: the stream Froude number Fr defined with the streamwise velocity, and the convective Froude s number Fr . Fr corresponds to the destabilizing effect of gravity waves due to the reduction of bed c s frictional force by water depth perturbations. Fr corresponds to the effect of wave radiation. To quantify c the effects of Fr and Fr on the shear instability respectively, linear stability analysis is performed c s numerically with a shooting procedure instead of the pseudospectral collocation method in order to account for the wave radiation from the shear layer. Initial results show that Fr stabilize the shear c instability and Fr destabilize the instability in compound channels with bed friction. The future work will s be on the linear stability analysis of shear instability in compound channels under more different S and Fr values, and the study of roll wave instability. c
