Study on Mechanical Strength of Vegetation Roots and its Effect in the Gravel-soil-erosion Field of the Tuotuohe River Region along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway

The Tuotuohe river region gravel-soil-erosion field along the Qinghai-Tibet railway was taken as the test site, where some dominating species were planted, and single root tensile and shear test were carried out to study the soil reinforcement capability by six herb species with five-year growth period. The testing results show the single root tensile resistance value is 4.44-2.99N, and single root shear resistance value is 4.33-3.85N. At the meantime, the fitted equations between root diameter and single root tensile resistance, tensile strength, shear resistance, shear strength were also established. Besides, the relationships between tensile stress and strain of six herbs species were analyzed. The results show that there exists a linear relation between single root resistance and root diameter, power relations exist between single root tensile strength and root diameter, and the single root strength decreases with the diameter increasing. The stress-strain curves of six herbs roots present linear relation, which reflects the linear elastic characteristics. Also, the power relations exist between single root shear resistance, shear strength and root diameter, and the single root shear strength decreases with the diameter increasing. According to the strengths of the six herbs, the reinforced soil mechanical effectiveness of the six five-year growth period herbs for slope protection have been proved.
