Field research on the appropriate growth conditions for zostera bed

Zostera beds have important functions as water purification, spawning and nursery grounds for valuable marine resources. In recent several decades, Zostera beds have been decreased remarkably by coastal reclamation, pollutant discharge from land area and gathering up the sand from sea bed in Japan. Therefore, the Japanese politic fisheries projects have been conducted planting experiments of Zostera beds in various coastal areas since around 30 years. However, there are few successful outcomes against their efforts before. In this study, we tried artificial creation of Zostera beds behind detached breakwater where wave height and energy was reduced. We observed the growth of seeded and transferred beds. Consequently we confirmed that the beds rooted and its area expanded through yearly fluctuation. We examined the appropriate growth conditions of Zostera marina by field survey on characteristics of the growth and distribution in the real sea area.
