Study of unsteady flow generated by boat motion, quantification of the impacts on riverbank erosion

Laboratory experiments are performed to determine the impact of navigation (sediment resuspension and riverbank erosion) on the navigation channel maintenance. To assess the effect of boat speed and draught on wave behaviours, an experimental study is performed. Results from towing tank experiments regarding field wave elevation and free surface flow of the Series 60, cB=0.80 model for Froude numbers based on the water height between 0.23 and 0.48 are presented. Instantaneous measurements of the wave height, by resistive probes device, and of three components of flow velocity in a plane, by Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry technique, are achieved. The spatial and temporal variations of velocity field and wave elevation field are detailed. We point out that these fields may have significant influence on riverbank and ecology.
