Discharge measurement method at night time using the surface image velocimetry (siv)

SIV(Surface Image Velocimetry) is a quite useful and simple instrument to measure water surface velocity with a series of images of water surface. Since it uses water surface images, it is difficult to measure velocity at night time when cameras can't take good images. It was one of the major weak points that had obstructed SIV from measuring whole day continually. The present study is to improve the system to measure water surface velocity at night time using an infrared camera. The system can capture 60 images per second, which would be fast enough to measure flood events with high velocity. Two application tests were carried out to an experimental flume and a river, once for a night time and once for a daytime with the same velocity. The test results showed that the average error reached about 12%, which is fairly satisfactory.
