Flow characteristics in wake zone of a pier founded in clay-sandgravel mixture

The paper describes flow and turbulence characteristics measured by an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) in wake zone of a pier founded in scoured bed of clay-sand-gravel mixture. Bed material used was consisting of mixture of clay and sand-gravel. Velocity and turbulence data were collected at 15 locations of 4 azimuthal planes (i.e. at 0, 30, 60 and 90⁰) in wake zone of the pier and 3 azimuthal planes (i.e. at 120, 150 and 180⁰) in upstream side of the pier inside and outside of scour hole. The maximum value of turbulence intensity and Reynolds stresses were recorded near initial bed level and thereafter these decreased towards the water surface except in 0⁰ plane. Turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses reduced, as one moved from nearer the pier towards the downstream in wake zone. Quadrant analysis was performed to demonstrate the importance of ejection and sweep phases in the process of sediment detachment and transport.
