The analysis of the influence of high-speed aeration jet on the side-wall of spillway tunnel

In this article, the influence of high-speed aeration jet on side-wall of spillway tunnel downstream of the middle gate chamber outlet is investigated numerically by using VOF (Volume of Fraction) method and RNG k-ε model. The main findings are as follows: the reflection caused by the high-speed aeration jet lashes against side-wall and base plate of spillway tunnel brings into intensively anisotropic near-wall flow, and leading to the water wing generated on the side-wall as the reflected flow diffuse to coping of the tunnel; the water wing makes the pressure and cavitation number decrease, which increase the probability of cavitation erosion of side-wall; the ratio of the maximum height of water wing to the length of water wing is mainly affected by the aerator type and Froude number at outlet of the middle gate chamber.
