IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Best practice flushing strategy at the upper river mur

The impoundment of the Upper River Mur in Styria affects sediment transport and produces a sediment deficit in downstream sections. The flushing of 4 run-of-river power plants counteracts the negative effects of sediment retention in the reservoirs. The interval of flushing campaigns to be effected for optimum sediment management was hitherto unclear. In addition, the flushing of run-of-river power plants may be associated with high loads of suspended sediment affecting the riverís biocoenosis, whereas draw-down operations may cause surges and negative surges. Within the EU Interreg IIIB Project ALPRESERV a water resources management concept was worked out. Together with an extensive ecological survey programme, it forms a part of an integrated flushing concept. This article presents an optimised flushing programme from the water management point of view and discusses a number of individual elements.
