IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

A STUDY ON LOCAL ICE PRESSURE MEASURED IN ICE BREAKING PERFORMANCE TESTS FOR THE ARAON IN THE AMUNDSEN SEA
Author : Tae-Wook Kim, Kyung-sik Choi, Sung-Chan Kim and Tak-Kee Lee
This study deals with the data obtained from two icebreaking performance tests in 2012 for the icebreaking research vessel (IBRV) ARAON in the Amundsen Sea. The first icebreaking performance test was carried out against a big ice floe with the size of 900m x 600m. The ice floe was 0.74 to 1.97 meters thick. The second test was performed against a big ice floe with the size of 1,100m x 600m. The ice floe was 1.06 to 5.03 meters thick. In order to measure the local ice load acting on the hull, 21 strain gauges were attached inside of the side shell plating of port and starboard sides in the bow thruster room.
