Bridge piers and abutments can change the flow field and characteristics in river channels due to the blockage effect. Local scour around bridge piers can be further complicated due to the presence of ice cover in the vast northern areas. Due to the limitation of field measurement, most of the present research is limited to experimental research. By using numerical simulation, the present research was conducted to simulate the flow field around bridge abutment under ice covered condition. Verified by experimental data, the 3D flow field and the influence of scour characteristics around bridge abutment under ice cover were discussed
