IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Implementing a Sea Ice Monitoring System in Deception Bay

Mining companies are exploiting and developing a major mining complex in Nunavik (Quebec, Canada), between the Inuit communities of Salluit and Kangiqsujuaq. Navigation through Deception Bay (Hudson Strait) is required to transport nickel concentrate as well as supply goods, materials and petroleum products to the mines. Winter navigation/ice breaking may impact the ice cover which could have potential effects on Inuit traditional activities and the ecosystem. With the objective of safer travels for both Inuit and the industry, as well as protection of the Bay’s ecosystem, this project investigate various technologies to set up a sea ice monitoring program in the area. This includes time-lapse cameras, underwater sonars, optical and radar satellite images and in situ measurements, coupled with local knowledge. This project will increase our understanding of the specific ice formation, growth and melting dynamics of this region, in the context of climate change and winter marine transportation. Here we present the instrumentation plan and some preliminary results from the first winter of data collection.
