Numerical Modeling of Icebreaking and Ice-clearing for an Icebreaker Advancing in Sea Ice

This paper is on the development of a numerical model to calculate ice loads acting on an icebreaker and ice floes’ distributions that icebreaker breaks plate ice into a discrete floe of certain size or removes ice floes. The numerical simulation calculates repeatable ship-ice interactions of icebreaking and ice-clearing. The ice floes are broken or eliminated by icebreaker depending on the size of an ice floe. A large ice floe is broken by bending and splitting induced by ship’s advancing. On the other hand, a small ice floe is eliminated by ship-ice collisions. A repetitive ship-ice contacts and icebreaking are calculated by a ship-ice contact detection algorithm as well as bending behavior of a floating plate ice. Splitting is calculated by the formula proposed by Michel (1978). The motions of ice floes due to the collisions with a ship and ice are described by the rigid body equations. Examples are shown in the wake of the icebreaker in order to identify an efficient way of shiphandling in ice-covered waters. It is shown that the ice force acting on the icebreaker and open channel after icebreaker’s advancing into icecovered waters is depending on the size of ice floe and ice concentration that affect ice failure mode. Ice splitting plays an important role to identify efficient ice management.
