Rex Alfred Elder (1917-2018)

IAHR Honorary Member and U.S. hydraulician, Rex Elder, passed away a few days ago.

Rex Elder, like Pavel Novak, was 100 years old.  Both men focused their careers on the design and performance of hydraulic structures.  Rex headed TVA's Hydraulics Lab for a good number of years before becoming Bechtel's top hydraulics engineer.

"Like Angelos, I was blessed to work for Rex through his entire Bechtel career. We had pretty much lost contact since his second retirement, but I would often think of him, and his special way of caring for the work - and for the workers. Not only at the top of his technical field of Hydraulic Engineering, but right at the top of my list of managers for the attention he paid to making work exciting and fruitful and excellent, expecting and getting the best out of the folks who were lucky enough to work for him. God bless you, Rex."

"I am saddened to hear of Rex Elder's passing. I first met him in the 1980s when I was a junior hydraulic modeling technician at Engineering Hydraulics, Inc. (now part of Alden Research Laboratory) - he was both a client and consultant to our firm. I encountered him several more times in my career, and I was always impressed with his charm, style, and depth of expertise. He will be missed."

"I worked for Rex Elder for several years when I started my career in Bechtel and I am grateful for his support and mentorship.  He is the one who introduced me to IAHR.  He was a great man.  I felt very sad when I read the news of his passing."
