I always enjoyed meeting and talking with Torkild, who had such a wealth of engineering expertise and experience, and who took such interest in the work of younger engineers. He certainly helped shape my career path in hydraulics.

Harald Frederiksen
"I got to know Torkild when we were at the University of Minnesota hydraulics laboratory where he was working on his MS. He was a very warm enjoyable person. He was also interested in professional organizations in the field. While at UofM we drove to Chicago for an ASCE conference. Our next visit was at the IAHR / ASCE 1997 conference in San Francisco. My condolence to his family. He will also be sorely missed by his many friends. Harald Frederiksen"

"A great personality and great human. During my course in 1988-89 had opportunity to listen his lectures on ice impacts on hydraulic structures and many times had lunch together in NHL top floor canteen. May His soul rest in peace."

"With great sadness we have received the news that Torkild Carstens has passed away. IAHR has lost an eminent key figure. We have many fond memories of Torkild, a close personal friend and an unpretentious, always friendly and open colleague with extraordinary engagement for IAHR. We used to have many vivid discussions during our jogging runs interrupting long conference days, and I also recall his strong support for early involvement of the younger generation in IAHR. Our condolences are with his family. And all his many friends in IAHR will keep Torkild Carstens in honorable and kind memory. Helmut Kobus, Germany"
