The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK, and the largest in Scotland. As a leading international technological university, Strathclyde University is recognised for its world class research, knowledge exchange and educational programmes. At the heart of this is the Faculty of Engineering which boasts a growing research portfolio of nearly £100 million. We are also the only Engineering Faculty in the UK to be engaged in eight multi-million pound EPSRC-funded Doctoral/Industrial Training Centres.
The Faculty was recently successful in securing funding for the establishment of the Strathclyde Engineering Academy which will, in partnership with industry and FE colleges, enhance the student learner journey, widen College student access to University and develop the hands-on skills of our future graduates.
The Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in teaching and research in naval architecture, ocean engineering, marine engineering, and small craft technology. The Department has excellent hydrodynamic testing facilities and expanding marine engine and fuel cell laboratories, and has led the establishment of Strathclyde Marine Institute which co-ordinates and promotes joint research in all aspects of marine science (both physical and social), technology, business, finance and law across the university.
The Department seeks to appoint 2 research assistants to participate in research projects. There are 2 roles; one is focused on the modelling, simulation and energy management of ship systems, whereas the other is focused on performing predictive maintenance modelling, reliability analysis using ship systems condition monitored raw data and development of a maintenance management system.
To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of 2:1 Honours Degree level in the relevant engineering subjects. You will have some knowledge of modelling, simulation and maintenance of marine power plants and ship auxiliary systems and an understanding of appropriate research methods within the marine systems engineering field. You will have knowledge of programming languages and databases development. You will have an ability to plan and organise your own workload and an ability to work as part of a team and be willing to contribute to the growth of the Department. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to interact with a range of stakeholders in both industry and academia.
