Environmental Chemist, Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, UK

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. Working in partnership with the research community, policy makers, industry and society, CEH undertakes cutting edge research to deliver world class solutions to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind. CEH has an annual turnover of £35 million, and employs staff across four sites; the headquarters is at Wallingford with further sites at Bangor, Edinburgh and Lancaster.

This position is based at CEH's Edinburgh research site within the Bush Estate, south-west of Edinburgh, near the Pentland Hills. The research carried out at Edinburgh forms part of a CEH-wide science programme, covering Biodiversity and Ecosystems, Water and Pollution science which is supported by the Environmental Data Centre.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed environmental chemist to work within the Atmospheric Composition team at our Edinburgh site.

The role requires efficient and proactive task management with the successful candidate being numerate and organised. It is desirable that they would already have some experience of air quality research

Specific responsibilities:

  • Coordination of small and larger scale operations of atmospheric monitoring networks;
  • Laboratory and instrumentation management including providing user support
  • Fieldwork to install and maintain installations including calibration and long-term sampler maintenance
  • Scientific support for experimental method development
  • Assisting report and scientific paper writing

Skills Required

  • Candidates will be expected to have a degree in Chemistry or applied Environmental Sciences and some project based experience of quantitative scientific work in a university or research environment.
  • Clear understanding of laboratory procedures and QA/QC methods are required including an understanding of analytical chemistry.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and teamwork skills in order to manage multisite measurement programmes and maintain data and metadata to a high quality.
