IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

Professor of Safety of Marine Systems, University of Strathclyde, UK

An Industry-University partnership involving, in the first instance, the University of Strathclyde – Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and DNV GL Classification Society is brought together to establish a Research Centre in Safety and Risk. The vision is to support the development and nurture the implementation of Life-Cycle Risk Management, accounting rationally and formally for all cost-effective measures of risk reduction and leading to sustainable cost-effective-safety-improvement for new and existing ships and offshore assets and to the development of a modern regulatory framework to support and nurture safety culture.

The first step in this direction is the appointment of unique individuals with the ability, knowledge, experience, international presence, calibre and self-belief to take up this challenge and to deliver this vision.

You will have a PhD in a field of science and engineering related to safety and risk of complex systems and a sustained track record of research publication and funding. You will be currently leading an independent and internationally recognised research portfolio in areas related to maritime/marine safety and risk, such as safety and security of complex and cyber-physical systems, dynamic barrier management, intact/damage stability and fire protection of ships and offshore assets, emergency response process and systems and accident investigation. You will provide academic leadership and make a significant individual contribution to research, knowledge exchange and teaching within the department. You will contribute to the support of early and mid-career academic staff within the research group, helping to ensure they reach their full potential. You will publish in leading international journals and have a track record of attracting significant research funding and prior experience of delivering lectures and laboratories to a high standard.

Professors are subject to the Charter and Statutes and Ordinances and Regulations of the University. As a Professor you will be responsible to Court of the University through the Principal for providing leadership in your academic area and will report annually on this. This is in addition to the responsibility which each Professor owes to his or her Head of Department.
