PhD position in Estuarine Sediment Dynamics at Ifremer/Brest, Ifremer/Brest, France
A highly motivated candidate is sought for working on: Numerical modelling of sediment exchanges from the Gironde estuary to the continental shelf.

The PhD project takes place in the framework of the ANR AMORAD project (Improvement of radionuclides dispersion and impact assessment modelling in the environment) led by IRSN (2013-2019). The "Sediment" action in the "Marine" axe aims at improving the understanding and the numerical modelling of potentially contaminated sediment fluxes, from continental origin and/or local sediment resuspension. The PhD will focus on the numerical modelling of sediment dynamics from the Gironde estuary to the continental shelf with two main goals: (i) to investigate the influence of hydro-meteorological events (e.g. high/low river discharges, storms) on sediment fluxes; and (ii) to determine the sediment accumulation and dispersion areas on the continental shelf. Especially, the work will focus on evaluating the role that play the estuarine turbidity maximum, lateral mudflats, and subtidal mudflats seaward of the estuarine mouth (West- and South-Gironde mudflats), in terms of fluxes, residence time, and temporary accumulation of fine sediments. In addition, the potential sediment transfer toward the Pertuis Charentais will be investigated. The numerical modelling will be based on turbidity measurements provided by the MAGEST network and on the acquisition of complementary validation data in the continental shelf seaward of the estuarine mouth (/in situ/vertical profiles of turbidity, satellite images).

*Profile:* the candidate will have a Master degreein coastal physical oceanography, or associated fields. Experience in numerical modelling of sediment dynamics is advisable.
