We seek an ambitious applied scientist with an interest in international development, tropical public health and climate change, water and sanitation, to study the impact of climate-related events on the effectiveness and costs of urban sanitation systems. You will be part of the international HyCRISTAL consortium that is led from Leeds and has members in East Africa, the UK and the USA within the DfID-NERC “Future Climates for Africa” (FCFA) programme. The HyCRISTAL project as a whole is working to understand the future climate of East Africa and use this to inform decision making on the 5-40 year time-scale. You will work with the HyCRISTAL team, and others in FCFA, to address FCFA’s aims of interpreting climate change information in ways that resonate with local policy makers. Specifically you will work with local government, professionals and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) at the city level to develop tools to estimate costs and benefits of sanitation interventions, and how these may change as climate change impacts on the frequency and intensity of weather events.
The work will be embedded in a large research group at Leeds, which has a strong track record in public-health engineering, offering opportunities for wider collaborative work.
This project presents a unique opportunity in a rapidly expanding field of engineering for climate change adaptation: the project as a whole will significantly improve our theoretical and conceptual understanding of climate change and climate variability in the tropics, and the interpretation of climate predictions for decision making at a local level. The models and their interpretation will also be used to drive collaborative work on physical, ecological and socio-economic impacts of climate change in the region, with others in HyCRISTAL conducting studies on impacts on rural livelihoods to complement your work on urban water supply and sanitation. You will contribute to our understanding of how global climate change has impacts on health risks associated with poor sanitation, costs of managing sanitation and the optimisation of both water supply, sanitation and drainage systems. We aim that the results will be developed into standard planning tools for use in East Africa and beyond.
You must have a PhD (or be close to obtaining) in public health engineering, civil engineering, process engineering or public health. You should be willing to collaborate actively with partners in Africa, the UK and the USA. You will be highly computer literate and have excellent communication skills.
