IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent member-based organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics, and hydraulic machinery.

PhD studentship for smart-eco cities of Europe and China Enrollment Sept 2016, University of Nottingham Ningbo, China

We would like to invite excellent candidates with expertise in any of the following fields: urban studies/ human geography/ environmental studies to apply to undertake postgraduate research in the Schools of International Studies and Built Environment and Architecture in the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. 

There is one full scholarship available working on the topic of ‘Smart Eco-cities for a Green Economy: a comparative study of Europe and China’. The aim of this interdisciplinary project is to provide the first systematic comparative analysis of green economy-focused eco-city projects in China and Europe. This will inform the identification of opportunities and pathways for shaping national and collaborative international urban and economic policy responses, engaging the state, the business sector and communities in delivering 'smart eco-city' projects that can promote the growth of the green economy. 

The candidate must be fluent in Mandarin (reading and writing) and expect frequent travel in China and Europe for fieldwork and meetings. In addition, the candidate will be expected to manage the logistical aspects of the project, such as managing workshops, in China.

The position is based at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China. It is available from September 2016 for a period of three years, with a stipend of up RMB 3,000 per month (c. GBP 300 per month) and an accommodation allowance of RMB 4,800 per year (c. GBP 480 per year) for local student and RMB 12,000 per year (c. GBP 1,200 per year) for international student. Tuition fees are fully funded and medical insurance and health insurance are provided.
