Research Associate, Imperial College London, UK

Applications are invited for a Research Associate based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. This post represents a great opportunity for someone of outstanding calibre and promise. The successful applicant will join the Structural Engineering research group as a member of research staff and will conduct research on a European funded project entitled “Overall-Slenderness Based Direct Design for Strength and Stability of Innovative Hollow Sections (HOLLOSSTAB)”. The work will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Leroy Gardner.

Applicants should have completed an undergraduate degree in civil engineering (or a related relevant discipline) and should have excelled during the completion of this degree. Holding a Master’s degree or equivalent) in a related field such as Structural Steel Design or Structural Engineering is desirable, together with a relevant PhD (or equivalent). Applicants should be industrious, dedicated, highly-motivated, ambitious, confident and co-operative individuals. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are also essential as is a strong ability in engineering mathematics and mechanics.

The primary focus of the proposed research is to examine the strength and stability of structural hollow section members and derive statistically validated design recommendations. The researcher will, most importantly, conduct full-scale tests of these sections and establish fundamental experimental data that will be used to validate numerical models developed concurrently. This will be followed by parametric analyses and the development of design rules. Experience with structural testing and numerical modelling is important.

The start date for this research post is negotiable and the salary will be based on the level of relevant experience of the successful candidate. Candidates who do not have a PhD (or equivalent) will be appointed at Research Assistant level within the salary range £29,800 - £32,970 per annum
