Computational Scientist/Engineer for Selective Fish Passage Project, The Great Lakes Fishery Commission, US
The Great Lakes Fishery Commission (www.glfc.org) is seeking a Computational Scientist/Engineer who can integrate physical and ecological systems to achieve complex automated or semi-automated solutions to selective bi-directional fish passage in the Great Lakes basin. Minimum requirement include a Ph.D. in quantitative ecology or engineering with experience, ability to quantitatively integrate physical and ecological systems using mathematical and statistical modeling approaches, strong coordination, organization, teaming, facilitation, problem solving and communication skills, and knowledge of fish passage issues including fishway design, dam removal, and stream restoration. The duty station is the US Geological Survey – Hammond Bay Biological Station located in Millersburg, MI.
 
Responsibilities
·         Provide technical direction for the development of architecture, engineering, interfacing, integration, and testing of complex systems infrastructure for selective bi-directional fish passage
·         Assist aquatic ecologists in design of novel automated or semi-automated fish sorting systems including electrical, pheromone, and alarm cue guidance systems, novel traps, and other new technologies developed through the Commission’s Sea Lamprey Research Program
·         Manage and implement design and construction of experimental channels associated with new or existing barriers in which fish sorting systems can be integrated for the purpose of achieving selective bi-directional fish passage
·         Coordinate required consultation, assessment, and permitting to allow project implementation
·         In collaboration with biologists, collect and manage data (i.e., video, telemetry, count) associated with fish behaviour during passage experimentation
·         Lead teams to conduct research on selective bi-directional fish passage in experimental channels and report results in peer-review literature
·         Co-develop and lead a new Commission research theme on selective bi-directional fish passage through participation on the Commission’s Sea Lamprey Research Board
·         Coordinate international (federal, state, provincial, aboriginal) resource agencies for input and participation on development of selective bi-directional fish passage
·         Develop relationships and formal working partnerships with industry
·         Coordinate and liaise with the Commission Landscape Conservation Cooperative Coordinator
 
Compensation
USD 85,000 depending on education and experience
